To Harvest and Protect
For over 30 years Southern Clams has researched the impact of its harvesting on habitats, refining its operations accordingly.
The Decades of research have examined the impact of harvesting in the local area, the results show that clam beds harvested by Southern Clams tend to recover over 50% of clam numbers a year after harvest, evidence also shows that reducing the shellfish density by 60% (like to thinning carrots ) has a positive impact on the remaining shellfish.
Committed to Carbon Neutrality
Southern Clams has invested in its own forestry venture and in 2011 its production footprint will be carbon neutral to the first point of sale in New Zealand. The company has a strong commitment to being carbon neutral to any point of sale in the world by 2018. Southern Clams have planted 83 hectares (205 acres) of bio diverse forestry in the Otago region and plans to plant 300 hectares (740 acres) by 2018.
